No vacation in Venice would be complete without the purchase of a souvenir, and no souvenir spells „Venice“ in the same way as does a sculpture made from Murano glass. For centuries, Venice was famous for its glass manufactories. After a fire all glass manufactories were moved to the island of Murano in the Northeast of the lagoon in 1295. Ever since then a strict secrecy law that threatened offenders with the death penalty ensured a monopoly on the manufacture of the colorful glass, the region is still famous for today. Nowadays, you can by nearly anything imaginable from small sculptures, paperweights, cups and vases to complete chandeliers in the many stores in each street in Murano.
